The Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine at New Mexico State University is a private, osteopathic medical school located in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Founded in 2013, the school is located on the campus of New Mexico State University. The medical school holds pre-accreditation from the American Osteopathic Association's Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation.

History

The Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine was founded in 2013, at a cost of $85 million. BCOM was granted applicant status in 2012 by the American Osteopathic Association, and ultimately received provisional accreditation in July 2015. BCOM will begin its first courses in 2016. The new medical school has received about $110 million in donations from private investors. BCOM is the first osteopathic medical school in New Mexico, and the second medical school in the state.

Academics

The Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine offers the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree. Years 1 and 2 of the DO program consist primarily of classroom-based learning. Students will complete clinical clerkships during years 3 and 4 at one of four primary sites: Las Cruces, Albuquerque, El Paso, Texas, or Tucson, Arizona. BCOM offers international elective clerkship rotations in Chihuahua, Mexico. A post-baccalaureate program is also offered for students interested in more preparation prior to entering health professional programs. BCOM features the Burrell Health Policy Research Institute. In partnership with New Mexico State University, BCOM offers a DO/MBA dual degree option.

Campus

BCOM consists of a newly constructed 80,000 square foot building located on the Arrowhead Research Park on the NMSU campus which is located next to the NMSU football stadium. Students at BCOM may access all of the campus facilities and resources at NMSU, and may opt to live in student housing.

Graduate medical education

BCOM has facilitated the ongoing graduate medical education (GME) development of over 100 new residency positions in anesthesiology, family medicine, internal medicine, orthopedic surgery, sports medicine, psychiatry and urology. Additional new GME programs are under development.
